History of the Supreme Court

 History of the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is one of the highest up courts in the judicial and federal branch. The Supreme Court is also known as SCOTUS. The Supreme Court reviews cases that have to do with the constitution. The justices on the Supreme Court basically uphold the constitution. We went in depth in class and in the videos we were assigned to watch about how much power the Supreme Court really does hold.

What did I learn about the Supreme Court that I didn't already know?

  1. I didn't know that the Supreme Court justices are chosen by the president and that the senate has the power to confirm or deny a candidate that the president selects. This could potentially be bad for the president because if the senate is not leaning towards to the presidents favor the president loses all that power that he possesses.
  2. I also learned that there are nine supreme justices rather than six. I have always just assumed there was six. I have not really paid much attention until recently on this subject matter. However, I am happy that now I know how the Supreme Court is comprised and how many people it is comprised of.
  3. Congress also obtains the power to structure the Supreme Court how they want too
What is the most important takeaway from this?
The most important takeaway from all of this is the fact that the Supreme Court holds so much power that they basically possess jurisdiction over all other branches of law. The Supreme Court rules over the executive branch and legislative branch, therefore they have all over control in the United States. The Supreme Court is extremely important to the citizens of the United States because they protect our constitutional rights. That is their job that they need to be executing.

What was the most surprising thing you've learned?
The most surprising fact that came to light was how the president picks who is on the Supreme Court. With both parties this could lead to bias and then that's when we start running into issues. People will accuse and possibly challenge decisions by the Supreme Court just because they could happen to be bias. On the other hand, this power that the president holds is really good for him because he in a way has them in his pocket just because he will know they all have the same views. This is probably one of the biggest powers that someone in the United States could possibly hold.

Blog Post #2 Ted Talk

Do we have privacy anymore?

We all believe that we as a whole are safe from hackers, says, etc. We believe that since our modern day safety technology has grown since back in the 60's or 70's we're automatically safe and our information is guarded completely or protected from strangers. In reality, we're just as exposed to outside threats from our social media as they were a decade ago. These safety issues affect me personally because I tend to post a lot across all my social media platforms that be including instagram, snapchat, facebook, and tik tok.

My parents have always talked to me about the dangers of the internet and of course I have taken in what they have said. However, I like the rest of my generation have fallen victim the how addictive it is to post daily across all platforms. I have recently learned about how the government can track what I am doing, therefore I need to be careful about the content I post. You never know what the government could be viewing or how they interpret what I post. I also need to be more aware of what future employers can see being that everything you post stays out there. Even when you try and delete it, it will never go away. It is a whole string of domino effects that can cause something bad to happen in an instant. We have to be aware of how much privacy we really do possess. These ted talks that we watched really brought an amount of awareness that this issue desperately needs.

The fact that scares me most about this issue is the mere fact that my location can be seen or hacked by anyone that has basic computer skills now a days. I never thought about my location being tracked by a stranger or the government until a few days ago watching these videos. I definitely have learned now that my location could be seen or found by everyone I have to be more cautious about where I go and if I go alone or not.

What can we do about our privacy being not so private?

We all would love to live in a world where we can guarantee that our right to privacy is protected. However, it's hard to pinpoint one singular thing to do to stop our privacy from being invaded. The most obvious way we can better protect our private information online is 1.) controlling what we post. 2.) Don't post any information about yourself or friends or family. 3.) Don't be naive.

Another idea could be to strive to make the government aware of how big this issue is and to hopefully get some laws passed and put in place to actually protect our privacy as a whole.

Top 5 news sources of information

Personally, I am really into politics. I have been into politics since the year 2016. I went to rallies that the former president had held. I try to be as unbiased as possible, however we all have our preferences to which news source we enjoy. My go to news source to get my information from is Fox News. Every night I watch tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and so on. I also however tend to look at the NY post. I know both of those news sources are Republican. Again though we all have our preferences. Fox News NY post

Another source of where I get my information is from my parents, especially my dad. My dad is a Republican so I get one sided information from him when having a conversation with him about whatever is going on. Therefore, I tend to utilize my mom because she is an independent. She doesn’t favor one or the other. She always has an unbiased opinion no matter the issue we are discussing.

Another source I get my news from is social media apps such as tiktok. Tiktok has an algarythem for what you like and then it appears on your for you page. Therefore, I get a lot of news focusing on the Republican side. Tik Tok

I believe these news sources are the ones to go too because yes they tend to be biased in the slightest, but not as much as other news sources. You will not find an unbiased news source now a days. It’s just a matter of how you personally interpret the subject or issue matter.
